2014 Nationwide Conference USSSA points race tightens!

The 2014 Nationwide Conference USSSA point standings have tightened up as most teams have now played the necessary 6 tournaments.  Remember the point standings are based on a teams best 6 point scoring tournaments so on the chart below the points in yellow are tournaments that have been "dropped" from a given teams total score.  Resmondos double point victory in Maryland brings them to within 11 points of Laservision for 1st place.  Resmondo of course has won the last two tournaments between them and Laservision but because the Maryland points count as two events because of the rainout of the first MD Dual, Resmondo has technically won 3 big tournaments when you include Chicago and Maryland.  Laservision of course won both tournaments at the Hall of Fame Classic as well as Columbus.  So although both teams have won 3 big events, Resmondo trails by 11 points because the Hall of Fame was worth so much more points (314).  More than likely this coming weekends Dudley Major in Minnesota will have no affect on Resmondos or Laservisions point totals at the end of the season as there are only 10 or so Conference teams participating and the winning team gets around 220 points because the Dudley winner starts at 180 points I believe plus 10×4=40 participation points.

What does this mean for the rest of the season?  It means that if Resmondo and Laservision continue to finish 1st and 2nd AND the Smoky, Cincinnati, and Michigan Majors have 33 or more Conference teams participate in each, then it may come down to which team can win 2 out of 3 of those tournaments and that team will be the 2014 regular season Conference Champion!

Looking at the rest of the standings it looks like Backman, Albicocco, and Baugh will fight for the 3-5 positions and it looks like there are 15 teams within 100 points of each other fighting for the last 6 spots to earn a berth in the USSSA Major World Series which takes the top 16 teams in the Conference standings.  Reds Astros, Combat/Blockers, Taylormade, 4 The Fallen, and Vivid are all 'A' teams that are currently on the outside looking in at the top 16.  Taylormade is probably in the best spot of any of those 5 'A' teams needing points as they only have 5 tournaments in their total so far.

There are just 10 Conference events left in the regular season.  13 tournaments are in the book.  Good luck to all teams.
