2012 Michigan Major tournament report

2012 "Last Chance"

Michigan Major NIT

Sterling Hts, MI

August 3-5

LineDrive Buzz broadcast the big games on the internet

The Michigan Major started on Friday night with the traditional "bracket style" home run derby which was won by Laservision/Eastons Bryson Baker.  In the games on Friday there were no upsets, in fact out of the 11 local teams there was only one team that beat a Conference team the whole weekend.

On Saturday morning Red's Astros beat Pure Romance, Sonny's beat TG United, and Westshore Pizza beat Columbus Pipe out of the Conference matchups in the first round.

It quickly became evident that Sonny's, Red's Astros, and Headhunters all came to play and try to earn their way into the top 16 in Conference points to make the Major World Series.  Those teams fought hard all day starting at 8 AM and ending for the Red's last game after 2 AM on Sunday morning!.

The tournament had some big upsets as Buzini knocked off Team Combat and Linedrive knocked off Nordkap/Desert Falls to solidify both teams spot in the top 16.

Resmondo was nearly tripped up by R&M.  R&M knocked out Sonny's.  Demarini/Dirty knocked off Laservision then was knocked off themselves by Red's Astros.

There were great matchups all over the park as 'B', 'A', and Major teams competed as if there were no differences in talent.

The games were delayed for an hour and a half Saturday night as a storm rolled through but when the tournament resumed it was Shoppe knocking off Resmondo in the winner's bracket championship by the run rule and Red's knocking off Team 454, and R&M over Sonny's to make it to Sunday.  On Sunday morning with a slight drizzle of rain coming down, Red's run ruled R&M, Resmondo run ruled Red's, and then Resmondo double dipped Shoppe in a pair of solidly played games to win the "Last Chance" tournament!

The tournament was played in near perfect weather for the most part with the Conference ball on 300 foot fields.  One knock against the tournament which had great atmosphere would be that there were not a lot of Conference umpires and the rotation of umpires left all teams except Resmondo scratching their collective heads.

While I am on my umpiring soap box I have to question a number of close plays at first base.  To me a ground ball in softball that is fielded and thrown to first base is an out so the runner had better be safe without any doubt, to be called safe.  And a runner that "steals" second by trying to stretch a single into a double had better be safe without any doubt to be called safe.  That way an umpire is putting the "proof" of being safe on the runner and rewarding, if you will, the defense.

Doc tosses the coin for home team at the championship game between Shoppe and Resmondo

Liberty Park is a great place to host huge tournaments

The small trees around all of the backstops make for great shade

Beautiful weather for the most part in Michigan this year.  R&M takes on Linedrive

The controversial call at first in the first inning of the first championship game was a legitmate tie.  As you can see just a little bit of ball outside the glove and the heel is a centimeter above the bag in the 1st frame.  A tie on a grounder at the Major level should go to the defense though.  Just my opinion.

Liberty is a great place to watch a tournament with no sideline fencing in the way

Team by team notes brought to you by:

1st Place – Resmondo-Specialty Tank Worth Nolkjdsa;lkajsdlkgajaljnresmondo-specialty tank worthresmondo-specialty tank worth

Conf 'M' from Winter Haven, FL 7-1 Record

Resmondo won their 4th straight tournament and won 4 straight to start the tournament eventhough they won "ugly" to beat R&M 24-23.  Then in the winner's bracket championship they got into a middle war for some reason and ended up letting the game get taken away from them by Shoppe 32-17.  In the loser's bracket on Sunday they run ruled a dead tired Red's team 21-1 and run ruled Shoppe in the first championship game 34-19.  In the second championship they beat Shoppe again 28-22 to take the tournament.

Resmondo continues to roll.  They played without the injured Jeff Hall and BJ Fulk was missing but the best team in the nation was persevered…again.

Resmondo's Andy Purcell sets up on defense.  Jimmy Salas at third, Don Dedonatis Jr at SS, and Bubba Mack at middle infield

2nd Place – Shoppe / Team TPS / Elite

Conf 'A' from McKenzie, TN  5-2 Record

SHOOOPPPEEE! nearly shocked the softball world as they rattled off 5 straight wins including run rule wins over their nemesis Demarini/Dirty 30-15, their TPS peer Sonny's 37-21, and yes even Resmondo 32-17.  On Sunday they were double dipped by Resmondo 34-19 and 28-22 in the championship.  A championship which, had they won, would have given them 40 more points in the standings and jumped them from 6th to 3rd!  ouch.

Anyways Shoppe has the timely defense, pitching, and offense to be a top contender for 'A' Worlds and them and TYJA are the hottest 'A' teams in the land.

SoftballCenter.com's most popular player Lee Powers.  I still have your prize shirt and Cordovas coming soon.

Jeff Payton was back after taking a bat to the bridge of the nose in Cincinnati

Shoppe's replacement for the injured Robert "Robo" Blackburn is Stevie "mini-robo" Allen.  He had 12 RBI in his Saturday morning game against Headhunters backing up Tim Cocco!

3rd Place – Red's Astros/TPS/Sports DenGTGG

Conf 'B' from Indianapolis, IN  7-2 Record

Red's Astros played their into a World Series berth by winning 7 hard fought games.  They had to finish 5th or better to have a mathematical chance and they did better than that.  A great team effort and a big payoff for a regional team that is new to the conference and makes the show in their first year.  They are also the only team to make the Major without having played in the Hall of Fame Classice Dual where teams earned so many points.

Instead of talking about Red's myself, I am going to re-post what main sponsor Herb Price said on TheOldScout.  This really is what softball is all about.  And no team showed more heart on the field than Red's Astros this past weekend.

Re: Red's Astros
Posted by Herb Price – Red's Astros/TPS on August 6, 2012, 5:00 pm, in reply to "Re: Reds"

I would be lying if I told you we don't enjoy the attention. We have a bunch of guys who had never played much USSSA let alone in the conference. Last year we played in two conference events close to us (Columbus IN and Cincinnati Ohio). It was a lot of fun and we held our own. We wanted to play more USSSA because the normal NSA competition was evaporating at the upper levels. We mulled joining the conference but due to budget constraints it was iffy. We were going to play a few events anyway. I used to play in the Smoky Mt Classic for years when it was an ASA event. When I found we probably could not play in it without joining the conference, that tipped the scales and we made the plunge. We have driven to six events. Going into the Last Chance it was a long shot to qualify. After losing to Demarini Dirty in game two the odds were even worse. My guys have great heart, desire and chemistry – they wanted it for Red and myself and they just refused to lose. If you looked at our stats for the weekend you would say no way that team finished third. We squeezed by a couple game before playing our best in the Demarini Dirty rematch late Saturday night that put us in then followed with wins over Team 454 and R&M. To their credit, they all congratulated us on a great run -as did Resmondo that ended our run in third place.

Thanks to my guys who helped me make a dream come true. I had been in the old ASA Supers, NSA Majors before but never made the big show in USSSA. Love all of them who overcame injuries, work schedules and family problems to compete with heart every weekend. As a result we had to carry 14-15 starters and when we had all at a tournament, they all understood and took their turn on the bench. Chemistry is our best assett – a team full of guys who think team first and "me" second. Guys who turned down offers for money to play elsewhere. We plan on being back in 2013 and probably as an A team now that we know what to expect. We are looking for sponsor help – and don't want to take this route again – we need to play in the HOF dual – may not be so lucky again. THANKS to all who love this game like I do (and my wife who lets me spend my retirement nestegg on softball – don't let her kid you – she loves it as much as I do. These guys are like "our kids" to me even though some are 40+) Can you believe it? We are going to Disney?

Former Hustlers pitcher Ryan Joiner has taken over the starting duties for Reds

Reds 3rd baseman Jake Stambezee and shortstop Travis Dale

Reds left fielder Brian Farrar is the only player on Reds that has previously played for a Conference team (I think)

Red's puts some gold in their uniforms this year to celebrate 50 years in softball

4th Place – R&M Metals/Troupe/Pipac/S&R/Easton

Conf 'A' from Waterloo, IA  5-2 Record

R&M persevered to a nice 4th place finish after one run wins over Linedrive and Sonny's.  They also had a one run loss to Resmondo where a couple of close calls didn't go their way.  R&M may have positioned themselves again as the darkhorse for the 'A' Worlds as it doesn't seem to matter who shows up on this team, they just play well and are capable of making a run.  Scott Zaciewski apparently will be released to go and play for Nordkap on Monday and they played without pitcher Kyle Yerkes this passed weekend.

Tied 5th Place – Team 454/Emerald/Worth

Conf 'A' from Glen Allen, VA  3-2 Record

454 cruised a little in the second half of the season and this tournament was no different.  In one game they dominate Nordkap 35-15, and the next two they lose by the run rule to Resmondo and then get knocked out by Red's Astros 26-19.

Which team will show for the 'A' Worlds in two weeks?  They finish the season 4-8 vs the 'A' division and 7-6 vs Major teams.  The 'A' Worlds is not an easy tournament to repeat, as a lot of breaks will have to go their way and they may have to double their season total of wins in one weekend to win it?

Tied 5th Place – Sonny's / Louisville Slugger GTGG

Conf 'A' from Casper, WY  3-2 Record

Sonny's came out of the gate knocking off Conference teams TG United, Laservision by 13 and scoring all of the difference runs without hitting homer's, and beating Buzini late in the game 19-18.  This positioned them in the semi-finals with only a 2nd place finish or better getting them into the Major World Series top 16!  They ran into a hot Shoppe team who out defended them in a 37-21 loss and came up 1 run short in the loser's bracket against R&M late on Saturday night.

Sonny's came up just short of making the World Series but can now concentrate on an 'A' World run in both USSSA and ASA.  Tony Verdugo apparently are no longer with the team.  I originally wrote Nick Robertson was no longer with the team, but that is incorrect.  Nick is still with Sonny's.

Sonny's outstanding backup pitcher Carl Blank

Sonny's Westy Guill is one of the fastest base runners in the conference

?

Tied 7th Place – Line Drive Sportz/SSS softball

Conf 'B' from Warren, MI  4-2 Record

Linedrive finished the regular season with a nice 7th place and a signature 46-28 beating of Nordkap/Desert Falls.  Linedrive also had a 20-19 loss to R&M on a walk off homer so the weekend was close to being even better.  Look for Linedrive to be the favorite at 'B' Worlds again this year.  They picked up pitcher Faron Miller.  They have basically built the perfect 'B' team although their record shows a 5-4 record in division and 3-9 vs 'A' teams?

Tied 7th Place – Demarini/Dirty/3N2/AtwldesignsGTGG

Conf 'A' from Orlando, FL  3-2 Record

Demarini beat Red's Astros in the 2nd round 26-19, setting up yet another showdown with 'A' rival Shoppe.  In that game Shoppe came away with a 30-15 run  rule win and dropped Demarini/Dirty to the losers bracket.  There they won a spirited game over Laservision 44-29 and then attempted multiple comebacks but fell to Red's Astros 38-34.  A solid weekend for Demarini who is a little worn out from their season of hustle and hard play.  Outfielder Andrew Collins injured his wrist in batting practice the week before the Michigan tournament and is out for the season.  Mike Wrenn moved to right field and Chris Larsen newly aquired moved to first base.

Demarini's Chris Larsen made his debut with Dirty

The Rest of the Conference Teams G

#9 Laservision/Anni/Aupr/D2E/Easton 3-2 – Laservision played without the injured Rick Baker, Brian Wegman (for most of the tournament), and a couple other guys were banged up.  But lets face it, everyone is banged up at this time of the year and it isn't like their talent on the bench isn't deep.  That being said Sonny's played the game of the tournament against Laservision in the second round.  Laservision led until the homer's were out and some poor defense and the fact Sonny's out hit them at small ball led to a 48-35 Laservision loss.  In the loser's bracket they smoked Team Combat 37-20 before Demarini/Dirty sent Laservision packing 44-29.

Laservision finishes the regular season without losing to a 'B' or lower team.  That is good.  But they finish with a 17-10 record against 'A' teams and a losing 6-10 record against Major.  That is bad.

In the words of Laservision member "we have put all of our eggs in one basket" and that is the Major World Series where they are probably still a distant 2nd pick to win the big one.

#9 P&P 333/Suburban/Larrys/AOS/Combat 3-2 – P&P comes up short of a World Series berth as they finish 22nd in the points.  P&P is a gritty team that has turned a few heads by consistently competing with the top teams.  In Michigan they beat PRI and B&B and had chances to upset Nordkap (35-33 loss) and hung with R&M 29-21 loss.  P&P could be a darkhorse in the 'B' Worlds but I feel this team is a year away.  P&P picked up former Bud Light slugger Scott Hille.

#9 Nordkap/Desert Falls/Easton 2-2 – Nordkap/Desert Falls finishes the season with three consecutive 9th place finishes.  They struggled past P&P in their second game and was down 20-0 to Team 454 in their first lost.  They were sent home by Linedrive 46-28 as the defense sputtered.  Much like Combat, this team needs to focus, work on defense in weekly practice and come into the Conference Championship knowing they have to pass Demarini/Dirty to get the 3rd position in points for the World Series.  Anything less and they put themselves in a position to have to beat Resmondo at the Series early on in order to salvage a season that has gone straight downhill after a strong beginning.

#9 Buzinisports.com/BWW/Worth 2-2 – BuziniSports.com came to Michigan to do one thing.  Solidify their spot in the World Series.  And they did just that with their second round win over Team Combat 24-20.  Then they nearly beat Sonny's but came up short 19-18.  Overall a solid weekend for Buzini and they should be a front runner for the 'B' Worlds in September.  Buzini picked up infielder Jake Mays after obtaining a release from 4 The Fallen.

#13 Team Combat/Pacific Headwear 2-2 – Combat beat two local teams but was upset 24-20 by Buzini and had the unfortunate luck of dropping into the losers bracket and running into Laservision early on.  In that game Combat had just 1 run for a number of innings before their offense showed up in a 37-20 loss.

There is some rumblings that because Combat isn't competing with Resmondo and Laservision and they didn't classify 'A', that they have "nothing to play for" for the rest of the season.  I disagree.  If everyone is healthy, and the fact this team has a lot of left handers, this team could pull an upset or two at both the Conference Championships and World Series.  They need to focus and play with a chip on their shoulder.

#13 TG United 2-2 – TG lost their opener to Sonny's 25-10.  Then they shut out a local team 15-0 and held Westshore to just 6 runs in a 7-6 win before dropping to Linedrive.  The good news is TG is coming back for 2013 as a Conference 'B' team.  They continued to tweak their lineup by picking up former Sinister infielder Josh Frank.

#13 Headhunter/Cancooker/SHSsports.com 2-2 – It just was not meant to be for Headhunters who won their opener against Great Lakes Express 33-13.  Then Shoppe jumped out to a huge lead on them Saturday morning but Headhunters forced 7 innings in a 41-32 loss.  Then a local team called Untouchable Films gave them all they could handle but Headhunters came back and beat them 42-41 for the highest scoring game of the tournament.  With their sites set squarely on Reds for a game which could have put Headhunters in the Major World Series, they came up short 17-16 with the bat in their hands and homer's to burn.

Headhunters has displayed incredible power and offense here in the second half of the season and it would have been fun to see them play on the stadium.  They played without pitcher Chad Loudon (appendix).  Get well Chad!

#13 B&B/Sears/N&N Finishing 2-2 – B&B played themselves out of a World Series berth the last two weekends in Maryland and now Michigan.  They lost to Team 454 and P&P and beat 2 local teams but it wasn't quite enough to pass Primetime.  For a short period of time during the Michigan tournament they were #16 in points until Reds had their miracle run to 3rd.  B&B joins the long list of great new Conference teams that had a taste of some success here and there but for the most part took their lumps.  As we have seen in the past though, taking your lumps in your first year in Conference can really pay off in years 2 and 3!

#25 Westshore pizza/tps  1-2 – Westshore has picked up former Suncoast center fielder James Curtis, super utility man Dave Garcia formerly of AJS, and professional hitter Dan Dillingham formerly of Suncoast in the last couple weeks.  They came out of the gate and beat Columbus Pipe but lost to Resmondo then got tripped up by TG United 7-6.  That last one hurts but Westshore took their lumps this year, tweaked their roster, was bumped to 'B' and come World time is a threat for a top 5 on the fields where they have had so much success in the Winter World tournaments!

#17 Pure Romance/Easton 1-2 – PRI lost to Reds and P&P and beat a local team.  PRI will set their sites now on a 'C' World Title and the competition they played this season definitely should of helped to prepare them for any challenge.

#25 Columbus Pipe/DSS bats/Easton 0-2 – Pipe just did not compete against Westshore Pizza only scoring 8 runs and then losing to a good 'D' team in Trust Sports Worldwide for the Conference's only loss against a non-conference team in Michigan.  Pipe's struggles and long season continue.  When its all said and done, they are 4-7 against 'B' teams this year which is slightly promising that they could win 2 or 3 games at 'B' Worlds.
