"Space City Classic" Tournament Preview
Houston Tournament Preview
"Space City Classic"
The "Space City Classic" in Houston, Texas this weekend features the largest field of any Conference tournament for the 4th straight year. An amazing 50 teams have entered. The Big League Dreams complex is a beautiful facility. All of the infields are artificial turf and unless it rains the infields are the best in the conference to field on.
The tournament breakdown is 50 teams total. 7 are from Conference USSSA including Resmondo as the only Major or team above 'A' in the bracket. There are 6 'B' teams, 15 'C' teams, 16 'D' teams, and 12 'E' teams. I've always said this would be a great place for a 'B' and lower only Conference event and this year it is nearly that. Would make for a great tournament with evenly matched teams. Just a thought. If all of the Conference 'B' and lower teams showed up, they would score a lot of points and one of them would get to win.
This is a tough tournament to make picks on because of all of the unknown teams. We do know Resmondo will win this undefeated 6-0 and all of their wins will be by the run rule.
As for the rest of the tournament, it has a great 'B' World feel to it. Team All Out and Texas Miken meet in the 3rd round. Arguably the two best non-conference teams in Texas. I'll go with Team All Out who will then get a rematch with Resmondo. Remember All Out beat Resmondo in Dallas on opening night pretty good and became the first non-conference team to beat Resmondo. It looks like Texas Miken though has beat All Out 5 out of 6 times this year. Interesting. Resmondo wins this quarter of the bracket regardless of who they play however and OldScout rumors have Andy Purcell returning to the hill.
In the second part of the bracket I'll go with Fence Brokers over TPS/Sportscenter. FBI does a nice job against 'C' teams (19-4) this year and Sportscenter has yet to beat a 'B' team. Could be a good game though. Winner gets Resmondo at 6:30 PM Saturday at Yankee Stadium.
The third quarter of the bracket is probably the most evenly matched. If Buzini can dodge the Texas Regulators bullets they should have a showdown with Sagnasty who is more than capable of a win here. Buzini is my pick to finish 2nd whether they win this game or not though, so I am taking Buzini.
In the last part of the bracket, Headhunters and Miken Mafia get the 1:15 AM, yes I said AM, start. Their reward if they win is a 2 PM second game. Monster Softball is in the bracket and we know they are a strong 'C' team. I'd say its a toss up between these three teams but I'll go with Headhunters 9 to 8 over Miken Mafia to advance to the final 4.
My final picks:
1) Resmondo – also more than likely won't play more than 5 innings in any game.
2) BuziniSports.com – team is playing 'A' caliber ball and finished 4th last year in this event.
3) Sagnasty's – will make a run in the loser's bracket.
5) Tied for 5th All Out and Headhunters
Resmondo tore up this tournament a year ago with over an .800 team onbase percentage
