ASA Nationals Day One Report – Friday

Day one complete at the ASA Slow Pitch National Championships in Oklahoma City

OKLAHOMA CITY — The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America Slow Pitch National Championships kicked off on Friday morning in Oklahoma City completing 22 games throughout the day in Men’s Class A, C and D action.  The Championship Series presented by Worth which contests of the Men’s Class C and D territory champions completed pool play while the Class A bracket opened up in the afternoon.

The Women’s Open teams competed in exhibition games as they begin championship bracket play on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. on the stadium field.

Men’s Class A
Four teams narrowed their path to the Men’s Class A title going 2-0 and advancing to the quarterfinals of the Winner’s Bracket of championship. 

Sonny’s/Desert Falls/TPS Elite (Casper, Wy.) defeated hometown team Honey Badgers/Enid Merchants (Enid, Okla.) 15-4 to start the day before trumping TYJA Sports/Easton (Great Neck, NY) 25-18, who earlier advanced on a forfeit.  Annihilation/PRI/Easton (Lawrenceburg, Ind.) dominated the competition outscoring its opponents 56-17 through two games and will meet up with Sonny’s on Saturday at 4 p.m.  Annihilation/PRI/Easton hit. 655 as a team and Bubba Mack led the home run category with three.

Long Haul Trucking (Albertville, Minn.) flexed its offensive arm early in the day with a 36-11 opening round win over ASPNation.com (Texas).  Fencebrokers/GameTime Supply/Worth (Bryant, Ark.) then gave Long Haul quite the match-up in the night cap on the stadium field tied at 14-14 in the fourth inning.  However, the usual strength of Long Haul prevailed with a 41-17 win scoring the most runs in a game for the day, including a grand slam from Ryan Plonsky.

In dramatic fashion, R&M/Troupe/Easton (Burlington, Iowa) captured the night’s most exciting game with a walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning from Nate Staats for a 30-26 victory over Team DeMarini (Santa Clarita, Calif.).  Down 19-5 after two and a half innings, R&M mounted a comeback especially thanks to Staats who finished the game going 5-for-6 with nine RBI.  In its second contest, R&M defeated Nordkap Construction/Tanel 360 (Andover, Minn.) 37-13 in a run-rule after recording a 15-run third inning and an 18-run fourth inning.

R&M advanced to meet up with Long Haul at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the winner’s bracket.

Saturday’s loser’s bracket games will kick off the day starting at 8:30 a.m.  The championship game for Men’s Class A is scheduled for Sunday at 9:30 a.m.  

Men’s Class C
West Coast Nitro/DeMarini (Highland, Calif.) outscored its opponents 47-20 in day one of pool play action in Men’s Class C earning the No. 1 seed heading into Saturday’s bracket play.   Led by the play of Alex Mugica who was 7-for-11 (.727) with two doubles, two triples and one home run, West Coast will match up with No. 4 seed BBS/Excel Homes (Rochester, Minn.) at 1 p.m. on Saturday.  BBS/Excel Homes struggled on Friday going 0-3 with its best match-up coming from a 15-19 loss to Hustlers (Cadiz, Ky.) 

The No. 3 seed, Hustlers, finished the day at 1-2 with their lone victory against BBS as Chad Mullins led the offensive charge for the day with three home runs and six RBI.  With a 2-1 record on Friday, No. 2 seed Berties/ Hub City put up a total of 41 runs on the day with Micah Fiveash tallying three home runs and six RBI.

Seed #2 Berties/ Hub City vs. Seed #3 Hustlers – 1 p.m. Saturday – Field 2

Men’s Class D
Representing the ASA Western Territory, the No. 1 seed Softball Junkies/DeMarini/Dss (Citrus Heights, Calif.) demonstrated a strong showing on day one of the Men’s Class D championship with a 3-0 record outscoring opponents 47-7.  With its largest victory coming in a 20-3 run-rule win over No. 4 seed Northwestern Mutual (Hagerstown, Md.), the Junkies scored in every inning with John Hernandez going a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI.

No. 2 seed Russell’s Paint and Body (Longwood, Fla.) completed the day at 2-1 capturing its two victories in the bottom of the seventh inning for one-run victories. Against Boar’s Butt they mounted a two-run bottom of the seventh15-14 victory while an 18-17 triumph over Northwestern Mutual completed the evening.

Boar’s Butt (Hackleburg, Ala.) finished at the No. 3 seed heading into Saturday’s bracket play with a 1-2 pool play record.  From the plate and the pitching circle, they were led by Jay Stanley who was 9-for-11 with one RBI.  Northwestern Mutual landed at No. 4 for the day failing to muster a victory inking a 0-3 record.

Women’s Open
The six competing teams of the Women’s Open division participated in three exhibition practice games on Field 3 on Friday evening.  The road to the National Championship for the women will begin and end on Saturday with the action kicking off at 8:30 a.m. on the stadium field with Armed Forces vs. Quiet Storm.
