The 2010 Major World Series featured 16 of the 17 top teams in the country and was played at the beautiful ESPN Wide World of Sports Champions Stadium.    The tournament was dominated by Resmondo Sports/Specialty Tank/Phonemaster's based out of Winter Haven, Florida, as they went 5-0.   Resmondo decimated the competition by outscoring them 141-41 and winning by the run rule in all 5 games!    In the winner's bracket championship and the finals they met their arch rival Dan Smith/Menossee based out of California and hammered them into submission by a combined score of 55-20.

The double elimination tournament opened on Wednesday night and the majority of games, I'd say 22 out of 30 were well played with good matchups.   Games were played from early morning until late night Thursday through Saturday with the finals on Sunday morning.   Weather for the most part was partly sunny, hot, but bearable, with the wind blowing from left to the right field corner most of the week.   Games on Wednesday and Thursday were winner's bracket games with loser's bracket starting on Friday morning.

On Friday night before the homerun derby, a lighting warning from Disney officials halted the games for 2 hours and had many derby fans headed to the parking lot.   The derby was interesting as Tim Cocco of Jean Shoppe blasted 22 homer's on 25 swings including a perfect round in the championship to clinch the title for the second consecutive year.   Most of his homer's carried over the yellow painted "Helmer's Wall" which sits behind the right field fence and parking lot.

As elimination day on Saturday came around, it became clear that the underlying story of the tournament was the FBI 'B' team out of Arkansas that registered big wins over EWS, Sinister, Suncoast, and Combat.   The last two being run rule victories.    Their only losses were to the two major teams Resmondo and Dan Smith.

Fourth was Team Combat/Laser Vision based out of Seattle, Washington who was playing shorthanded but won 4 straight after losing their first game on Wednesday night to GTL, 33-29, in extra innings.

All in all it was a very well played tournament except for the winner's championship and finals which were a let down for for all.

DW's Fixed Camera – I recorded the loser bracket games and webcast them live from a stationary DV camera connected to a laptop computer.   What I am saying is, it was cost effective but not of the greatest quality.  Better than radio but worse than TV.

Saturday night winner's bracket finals crowd was the largest of the weekend.

Crowds for the homerun derby went down after the rain began to fall

The "Helmer Wall" in right field looks like it is directly behind the fence, but it isn't.  Storms roll in.

1st  GTGG  ResmondoSport/Specialty Tank/Phonemaster

Conf 'M' from FL,  5-0 Record

Resmondo dominated every phase of every game.  Pitching, defense, baserunning, extra base hits, two out hits and the list goes on and on.   Resmondo dismantled each opponent mentally by jumping on them early.   They outscored their opponents 77-13 in the first two innings in the five games combined, averaging a 12 run lead going into the 3rd inning.

Congratulations to Resmondo who seemed to be at their lowest moral point in team history after the Conference Championships where they went 1-3 and quite a reversal from the 6-7 record against upper level teams over the previous 3 tournaments.

Resmondo sponsorship group trophy presentation

Resmondo finishes off Dan Smith by the run rule

I did a statistical analysis of the series.

A/B teams playing AGAINST EACH OTHER batted .527 and hit a homer every 10.95 at bats.

A/B teams vs Resmondo batted .463 and hit a homer every 6.7 at bats.  (interesting on the homerun frequency although Resmondo games were all at night time when the ball goes better)

Dan Smith playing A/B teams batted .611 and hit a homer every 3.65 at bats.

Dan Smith playing against Resmondo batted .455 and hit a homer every 4.58 at bats.

The conclusion here is that teams hit 70 points lower vs Andy Purcell and Resmondo's great defense eventhough 4 of the 5 games Resmondo played were at night when the ball flies better.

On the offensive side Resmondo batted .675 which was 74 points higher than the second highest team and they had an onbase of .711 which was 75 points higher than the next highest team.

Resmondo's Tournament MVP Don Dedonatis Jr. (13-16 .813, 7 HR, 12 RBI) and wife

Jr was well deserving but I had Purcell and his dominating pitching as the MVP, 13-19 .684, 4 HR, 14 RBI.   ERA = 16.04 (which is very good for Major Softball)

2nd  GTGG Dan Smith/Menossee

Conf 'M' from CA,  4-2  Record

Team Dan Smith looked ready.   They had their gloves and everything

Dan Smith did everything a team needed to do to win the Major coming into the tournament.  They got hot at the end of the season, beating Resmondo 5 of the last 6 times they played, on both softball fields and baseball fields.   They were as healthy as they had been all season as well.   Second place is was not what this team came to accomplish.    It was win or bust for this Dan Smith team and bust it was.

After a 20-1 drubbing of Hubs Pub in their opener on Wednesday night the Dan Smith team had some inner turmoil as middle infielder Dal Beggs was reacted to his benching.   This benching and his subsequent departure from the team led to an infield that had players playing out of position.   I suppose the mentality that they could just win with homeruns was in the back of their minds.   Playing Helmer at 2B against Resmondo just doesn't work and Denny Crine was playing 3rd base in the championship because Genter was struggling at the plate.   Helmer was slow on the doubleplay turns and struggled with the hard grounders.   The management needs to be more creative.  Maybe play Genter at middle infield.

In their 2nd game against AJS on Thursday, DS used a Brett McCollum bomb to take a 19-5 lead in the 4th and a Helmer grand slam in the 6th to win 30-20.

On Friday against Shoppe, Dan Smith trailed 14-10 until a 10 run bottom of the 5th followed by a great diving stop by JD Genter ended the 6th with Shoppe rallying.   Smith won 24-21.

On Saturday in the winner's bracket championship Dan Smith had a complete offensive and defensive meltdown as Resmondo crushed them and flip flopped them 29-11.  Dan Smith management did not make one substitution in this game and pitcher Geno Buck allowed 29 runs on 25 hits with a staggering 11 walks?   The defense also contributed to the delinquency with a multitude of bad errors.   I have been told by some that the strikezone in this game was skewed towards Resmondo.   I have to say that at this tournament more than any other I payed attention to strikes and balls more than usual and I didn't see a difference between the two teams.   I'll go back and look at the video though and see if I can see anything there.

Early Sunday morning in the loser's championship Dan Smith trailed FBI 13-2 in the third when Jeremy Isenhower hit a grand slam and the first 11 hitters scored on 10 hits to make it 13-13.   The game was close from there on.   In the 6th JD Genter hit a solo homer to get the lead 22-21 and Smith held on to win 23-22 when FBI only scored 1 run in the last 3 innings.

In the Championship game, two Dan Smith errors in the 2nd inning led to a BJ Fulk grand slam and an 11-1 deficit which got worse in the 3rd (25-2).   In the 3rd and 4th Brett Helmer hit homer's which were his record 93rd and 94th in World Series play.   The homer in the 4th kept the game from being a 20 run rule but Smith would lose in a rout 26-9.

Conf 'B' from AR,  4-2  Record

Highest finishing 'B' team ever at the Major World – 3rd Place – Fence Broker's Inc/Gametimesupply.com/Worth

FBI trailed in their opener 6-0 in the 1st inning against EWS but put up an incredible 16 run third and cruised to a 26-16 victory.

On Thursday afternoon they used a 3 run homer by Zach Keene in the 1st and 3 more HR's in the 2nd to take a 12-6 lead on Sinister.   Then Sinister responded with a 10 run 3rd inning behind a Kevin Filby bomb to make it 16-13 Sinister.   FBI kept it close the rest of the way with outstanding defensive plays by Tim Bowser at first base and a great diving catch in left field by Chad Walker.   FBI finally won in the 8th inning on a Reggie Schulte go ahead homer and held off Sinister 26-23 on another Chad Walker diving catch.

On Friday evening after the rain delay and the homerun derby, FBI allowed 11 runs in the first to Resmondo and lost 26-6.   In the game Resmondo's Greg Connell hit a bomb over the "fake" flags in left field, Brian Rainwater hit a rainbow homer to deep right center field, and Jeff Wallace hit one over the 6 story high scoreboard in center field.

On Saturday FBI knocked off Suncoast 28-8 on early homer's by Reggie Schulte and John Glidewell and back to back triples by Schulte and Chris Walker.   Then late Saturday night FBI run ruled Team Combat 29-14 behind 8 homer's including two by Tim Howard and an 8 run first inning.

On Sunday they led most of the game against Dan Smith but fell short with a pair of eggs late and a 1 run 7th to lose 23-22.

FBI finishes as the top finishing 'B' team in World Series history and finish the season with a 23-13 record against A/B teams.   A great run for FBI who played without SS Pat Burton, Brent Gigerich, and a couple others.   They replaced those guys with the up and coming outfielder Reggie Schulte the defensive specialist middle infielder Joey Tautges (both from Mr D's of the ASA world), and former Savesecond shortstop Joey Urbanek who played a gritty tournament and hit the ball very well.

 4th  Team Combat/Laser Vision

Conf 'A' from WA,  4-2  Record

Cooper explains to his team that in order to win, you have to hit the ball to right field where the wind is blowing out!

Team Combat opened up late Wednesday night with a 33-29 extra innings loss to GTL in a game that could have gone either way.   On Friday they used two Jason Kendrick homer's to beat Albicocco 16-15.   On Saturday morning they put up a 20 run first inning on the baseball field behind the Stadium against Sinister and won 26-3.   In the afternoon they run ruled Logo Express 22-7 when Johnny McCraw hit one off the scoreboard in the first inning and robbed Brian Autry of a 2 run homer in the 4th.

Late afternoon Saturday against Jean Shoppe, Combat used a pair of double plays, a great catch in RF, and a diving stop by Sena to overcome a Cooper ejection in a close game.   They also scored 9 runs in both the 4th and 5th innings to win 25-16.   Johnny McCraw had 2 homers and Jason Kendrick had 3.

In the night cap Saturday to go to the final 3 on Sunday, Team Combat hit 9 homer's including 4 by Jason Kendrick but lost big to FBI 29-14.

Team Combat played without Rusty Bumgardner and Robert Blackburn who were out with injuries.  Robert Sena did a nice job at 3B defensively, Chente Granados has stepped up his game offensively and Johnny McCraw, Seth Stephens and Jason Kendrick were making the homerun look easy most of the week.   Mike Dill was also lacing hard linedrives all over the park as he batted a team high .765 on 13-17 hitting.

GTL was the tournaments best chance to beat one of the Major teams but they never got the chance.

GTL opened with an extra innings win over Team Combat 33-29 when the ball was absolutely flying.   Then they lost on a walk off homer by Scott Nastally in the bottom of the 7th 16-14.   In the loser's bracket, Conference Defensive MVP Matt Pesso made 3 great plays and GTL beat Wood Law 15-13.   In their final game against Suncoast, GTL could not muster any offense with the wind blowing in hard and lost 14-10.
