Did Mike Vaughn from Tennessee ever play for Howards from 1977 – 1980

  2. I was Don “Slab” Chilton’s nephew, followed him with Dad to hundreds of games probably. I started playing at age 11 in Church softball, still play that and Seniors in Cary, NC. At a young age I played in a tournament against Howard’s and also the Tri-City Triplets of Leaksville, NC. The only two I remember were Don Arndt and Danny Carver, I had met them many years before traveling to see my Uncle Don play. I know my uncle and Danny went on to play with Aetna later, Don had played with many teams,..Short Sugars and Gem Dandy of Reidsville, NC, and Huffman Oil of Burlington.

I have pitched to a few more great hitters, Clyde Guy and Todd Martin in my latter years, before leaving Reidsville. I was hoping to find more information on the Aetna Team, would appreciate anything I could find.

So happy to see this article. My father, Walter “Pepsi” Church played proudly for the Howard’s Furniture team in the 70’s. He was one helluva outfielder. I believe he may have pitched at one time or another as well. Do you have any info or pics of him in the line-up? Sure would make me and him very happy to see anything you might have. : ) Thanks again for this article.

John Imlay and Agnes are trying to get in touch with Crusher. John was a coach with Superior Apollo. We would like to contact Clyde Guy also. That team was great. Can you tell him to give John a call. Our home phone # is 609-424-3322. Or give them my email. Thanks, John

I watched the 1977 Howard’s team play in Eden, N.C. at Draper ball park with my dad. They were so good it stamped a place in my memories forever.

Just wondering Mr Rule what team was you on loan from to play with mom and pops in 81 and arena folded after 1978 season lol

  10. I got to see Howard’s at it’s finest. In’74, York, Pa. Had to go through the losers bracket for them in the end. We pounded them in game 1. Unfortunately we just pissed them off. They came back like James Bond on a mission. Might have been by 10 or more. Beside paying 9 games or so, what I remember mostly was after the last game. With 2 outs I got a hit.Next batter flies out and the dream dies. Then Mr. HT Waller their 2nd baseman held out his hand to shake and in the other hand was a Howard’s cap for swapping.
Somehow I lost HTs cap when we moved from Key West.It was a treasure. HTwas special. Hit more home runs by hitting softballs, 276’ 301, 311, etc.
